From Regional Patient Advocate Patricia Karani

HAE International was able to make collaborations with the Sudanese Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (SSCI&A) to conduct the first doctor training seminar on HAE amongst health care professionals in Sudan. The online seminar was hosted by Dr. Rayan Goda, a clinical immunology and allergy specialist, and Dr. Nahla Erwa, a clinical immunology consultant and Assistant Professor at the Soba University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, who is also the President for the African Society for Immunodeficiency (ASID).

The seminar took place over two days, with two sessions each day. The first one was conducted by the HAE International President & CEO Anthony
J. Castaldo, and Fiona Wardman, Chief Regional Patient Advocate for HAE International. They elaborated on the important role that global organization plays around the world as well as the tools that doctors could utilize in improving the situation in their country. I shared my detailed journey towards diagnosis in an African setup.

The second session was the scientific one which was done by Dr. Priya Bowry, an allergist and general physician from Kenya, in partnership with Professor Jonathan Peters who specializes in allergology and clinical immunology at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute, South Africa. They focused on the pathophysiology of HAE and the differential diagnosis between allergic angioedema and HAE. Professor Peters also highlighted his journey in realizing a patient group in South Africa as well as how they were able to get the first modern medication available for his patients.

The sessions were very interactive with a good question and answer session that highlighted the interest of doctors in Sudan.
